A boys-only holiday as Dáithí Ó Sé’s wife Rita prefers to stay home.
The popular presenter has opened up about how he and his family take an unconventional approach to family holidays as his wife Rita chooses to stay at home while father and son head off to the sunshine.
Dáithí takes their twelve-year-old son, Mícheál Óg, or Ógie, as the pair affectionately call him, to Spain, and Rita remains in Ireland.
It’s fair to say that her reason for staying home is one a lot of people will identify with as the Up For The Match host revealed why his wife won’t join her clan on the four-day trip.
‘It’s just me and the young fella,’ he told the Irish Independent. ‘Rita hates the heat and hates the sun.’
Despite the mum-of-one hailing from the home of beach towns and boardwalks, she would rather endure the Irish weather than holiday with her clan.
‘That’s why she doesn’t like going home to America during the summer, it’s just so hot in New Jersey,’ Dáithí explained.
‘So, myself and the young fella do this every year. We’ll lie on the beach and jump in the sea for the whole day. It will just be a bit of craic.’

However, Rita doesn’t stay in Ireland for all twelve months of the year. She regularly returns home to America, alongside Ógie.
Rita, who represented New Jersey at the Rose of Tralee festival in 2008, makes a habit of taking their only child back to the US state every year.
While Dáithí accompanies the family when he can, presenting duties often mean he can’t accompany his family.
