Dermatologist warns parents of dangerous skin trend teens are obsessed with

by Cathy Donohue / 3 days ago

Teen parents, there’s another trend teenagers are obsessing over and this one could prove very dangerous.

According to several experts, teens want to tan and aren’t too concerned about how this may result in detrimental effects over time.

This newest skincare trend, one of many skin focused teenage trends, has triggered concern among dermatologists who have explained what the trend is all about and why it’s so dangerous.

Speaking on CBS, dermatologist Dr Rachel Nazarian gave her take on tanmaxxing and how it can be particularly problematic with teenagers buying into the trend.

‘It’s maxxing out your tan. It’s making it look dramatic. Going into tanning beds, trying to get a dark tan, showing off the tanning lines’.

She said that part of the problem is that people are now getting lots of information on platforms like Instagram and TikTok and it’s often inaccurate, which is why she believes that medical professionals such as dermatologists need to be more vocal on social media so their expert opinions are heard.

Dermatologist warns teen parents of worrying skin trend

Dr Nazarian also talked about how not only is skin cancer a major risk associated with this trend but it also contributes to skin aging.

Speaking specifically about teens and the impact this kind of skin trend can have on them, Dr. Zainab Laftah spoke to The Huffington Post.

‘Conversations about skin health, rather than appearance, can help teenagers develop healthier attitudes towards sun safety’.

Although you might feel like you’re saying the same thing over and over when it comes to skin safety, experts maintain that it’s absolutely vital that teenagers understand the potential dangers associated with tanning.

Reminding them to apply suncream regularly and exercising caution during peak hours of sunshine are just two of the things we can do.

Other experts remind parents that if your teen is focused on the idea of tan, then fake tan products are a much safer alternative.
