Do you think teens should be able to cook these three meals?

Parenting is all about raising our children to be the best possible adults they can, to know how to be a good person and survive on their own in the real world. This involves teaching them some less-than-fun, but very important skills, such as using the washing machine, money management and how to cook for themselves.

Sometimes cooking or cleaning with our kids can seem like more of a hassle than it’s worth; it’s messy, slow, and you can usually do a better job yourself. But it is important, and so beneficial for them – we want to teach our children to be independent after all.

3 meals teens should be able to cook

Deirdre Doyle, who runs The Cool Food School, an educational resource for parents about kids’ nutrition, has shared three meals that she thinks kids and teens should be able to cook.

Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about – powered by everymum.

These include:

1. Eggs – Whether it’s boiled, scrambled, fried or an omelette, eggs are a quick and easy meal that teens should certainly know how to whip up. ‘If your kids can cook eggs, they’ll never go hungry!’

2. Spaghetti bolognese – Spag bol is a simple meal that takes just 20 minutes to cook, is nutritious and can be adapted to use whatever you have in the house. ‘It’s easy, filling and a great way to eat extra veggies like grated carrot and spinach. Also, very flexible. Add cumin, paprika, chilli powder and kidney beans to make chilli. Or use leftovers for tacos or even lasagne,’ she said.

3. Roast chicken – This sounds complicated but as Deirdre says, it’s so simple. ‘Literally, bang your bird in the oven and wait (or make all the bits to go with it!).’

Many people took to the comments to share their thoughts, and the majority were in agreement.

‘Basics are best Deirdre! The perfect list,’ one person said, while another added: ‘These are excellent basics to have and so nutritious’.
