How adorable is this Irish baby name that hardly anyone has heard of?

There are many beautiful names inspired by summer, and we recently came across an adorable Gaelic moniker that is not only perfect for summer-born babies, but that is actually so rare very few parents have even heard of it, let alone decided to use it.

In fact, according to the Central Statistics Office, this Irish baby name is so rarely used, it did not make the list of registered names for 2025 – meaning it was given to less than three infants born here in Ireland last year.

The moniker in question?
Somhairle.
According to Nameberry, Somhairle (pronounced ‘SOR-la’ or ‘SORE-luh’) is a ‘rare masculine name with deep Gaelic roots, predominantly found in Scottish and Irish traditions.’
And it looks like we might have the Vikings to thank for this particular moniker.
‘Somhairle is the Gaelic form of the Norse name ‘Sorley’ or ‘Somerled,’ which is derived from ‘sumarlidi’ meaning ‘summer traveller’ or ‘summer warrior,’ Nameberry explains.
‘The name carries historical significance, notably associated with Somhairle MacGillebride, a 12th-century Norse-Gaelic warlord who established the Lordship of the Isles in Scotland.’
They also reveal that despite its rich heritage, the name Somhairle remains rare. But this might not last once parents realise just how lovely this moniker really is.

We also reckon the anglicised version Sorley is pretty sweet too, and so do the baby name experts at The Bump.
Of the name, which is said to mean ‘summer warrior’ or ‘summer sailor,’ they say:
