A mum has admitted that she is feeling ‘insecure’ about her choice of baby name after she faced criticism from her family.
Choosing a baby name can be quite the task, especially when there are two parents in the picture with different opinions, preferences and interests. Narrowing down a list takes time, and often there’s an argument or two in there as well.
Then, when you throw in the opinions of other people, especially your own parents who are of a different generation and probably have very different ideas of what a ‘good’ baby name is, things get even more complicated.

This is why most people keep their name of choice to themselves until their baby is born, because at that point, the vast majority would think twice before sharing any negative opinions.
This is the mistake that one mum-to-be made, and she took to Reddit to ask if the names she had chosen for her baby boy were ‘that bad’ and if she should change them.
Posting on the Baby Names subreddit, the mum-to-be said that she had chosen Cecil as a first name for her unborn baby and ‘Tenebris’ for his middle name. The mum explained the reasoning behind the names, telling readers: ‘We settled on ‘Cecil’ after much back and forth because we wanted him to have a name that isn’t likely to be shortened or replaced by a nickname, and we really liked how it sounds. For a second name we decided to go for something somewhat out of the ordinary and picked ‘Tenebris’, a Latin word that sounds interesting and unique.’
She added: ‘Also, it being a second name means he will always have the choice to use it or not, depending on whether he likes it.’

Mum asks for advice after her baby name is criticised
However, after sharing the names with her parents, they tried to convince her to reconsider, leaving the mum unsure about her choices.
‘They have been telling me that both names are bad and inappropriate and saying that Cecil is not a name for a boy and Tenebris should not be allowed because it is not really a name,’ she said, adding that it has been extremely stressful for her.
The mum asked other people for their opinions on the names, saying: ‘Are they that bad? By now I’m getting a bit insecure about this whole thing.’

People had opinions
People were happy to share their opinions and not all of them were positive. While the majority thought Cecil was ‘fine’ and ‘good’, it was Tenebris that they had a problem with.
‘Cecil is good. Tenebris is ridiculous,’ and another added: ‘Tenebris literally means dark and foreboding. Awful name. Cecil is fine but work on a middle name that connotes dignity and respect for your son.’
‘Tenebris is Latin for darkness. Personally, I wouldn’t – it sounds like something from a fantasy novel and not in a good way,’ said someone else.
Others disagreed with both the names, claiming that the child would get bullied. ‘Oh this kid is gonna get so bullied in school,’ said one critic and another chimed in: ‘It’s horrible, I am sorry. Both names’
