Emily Atack has recently opened up about a period of her life that she has never spoken about in public before.
Best known for her role as Charlotte in The Inbetweeners, Emily recalls how her teenage years were anything but simple.
From coming to terms with being sexually assaulted as a child and becoming pregnant at 16, Emily spoke of how this often contributed to her ‘picking the wrong guy’ to fall for.
Emily Atack opens up about her difficult past
The actress who became a mum for the first time in 2024 to baby Barney, joined Elizabeth Day on her podcast, How to Fail with Elizabeth Day.
Looking back on her past, she talked about how when her parents were going through a divorce, she began to hang out with the wrong crowd.
‘I remember when my dad left, I remember, at the time, and I’ve never actually told anybody this, but I was pregnant, and I was very young. I was in this awful, abusive, horrible relationship, and I fell pregnant.’
Emily says that a sexual assault she experienced as a young child, on top of her parents’ divorce, had a major impact on her life going forward.
Moving to London with her sister, Martha, at a young age, Emily made up her mind that she was going to be an actress and was determined to make this happen.
She went on to date some very famous faces such as Harry Styles, Liam McGough and Giovanni Pernice, but it was her fiancé, Dr Alistair Garner, who she said saved her.
While Emily praised her parents for being amazing parents, becoming a mum herself has made her realise how difficult it must have been for them.
Being open and honest, she said, ‘Those mistakes, I think actually they’ve led me to be where I am now because I think a lot of people think that I had it all handed to me on a plate because of who my parents were and because my mum was an actress, but I did it by myself.’
