Rio Ferdinand’s son admits he tried to sabotage dad’s relationship with wife Kate

by Louise Porter / 4 weeks ago

Kate Ferdinand has revealed that her now stepson, Tate, ‘hated’ her during the early days of her relationship with his dad, Rio Ferdinand.

The 17-year-old rising soccer star is the son of Rio and his late wife Rebecca Ellison, who sadly died at the age of 34 from cancer. Rio went on to marry and have two more children with Kate and while they have a lovely relationship now, Tate says he wasn’t at all happy with their relationship in the beginning.

Speaking on Kate’s Blended Podcast, Tate says that he struggled with welcoming Kate into his life, and tried to sabotage their relationship.

Tate admitted that he told lies about Kate in an effort to break her and Rio up, including that she was ‘meeting random men’ in their driveway and that she locked him and his siblings, Lorenz, 19, and Tia, 15, in a room.

‘Once I got a phone for Rio and the kids were asleep… someone came to drop it on the drive and they’re a man,’ Kate said.

‘Tate told people that when dad’s not there, I’m meeting men on the drive. So then a few people thought that when Rio was out, I was meeting random guys on the drive.’

‘You just had a hater in the house. I used to be so jealous. Not jealous, I don’t even know the word, but I would try and like get into all of your business,’ Tate replied.

Touching on the lie that Kate had locked Tate and his siblings in a room, Kate said that she had ushered them into a room when she was getting a delivery. But it ‘spiralled out of control’ and came out when Tate spoke about it as ‘When dad’s not there, Kate locks us in the room.’

‘I was just in such a confused state of mind. I didn’t know what was going on. Dad didn’t really like surprise us with things like that.

‘So that was like a bit of a weird thing like, “why am I being told to stay in here for five minutes?” You come back as if nothing’s happened,’ Tate explained.

He went on to say that he would play ‘mind games’ with Kate, sometimes acting kind and then not speaking to or looking at her. And he felt guilty when he began to like his now stepmum.

‘I remember when I hated you. I hated you. And then we might do something good and then I would flip straight away back into loving mode and then I’d have to almost lie about what I did before to get myself out of it,’ he recalled.

‘I felt so guilty for liking Kate and loving Kate. I felt guilty for my mum’s family, for my mum.

‘It’s a really weird feeling because one part of me really likes her… and then the other part of me thinks, “Oh, there’s a loyalty towards my mum here, what am I doing?'”

Kate and Rio began their relationship in 2016 and tied the knot in 2019. In 2020 their first child, a baby boy named Cree, was born. Their daughter, Shae, was born three years later.
