An Occupational Therapist has shared the TV shows that she does let her kids watch and they are worth taking note of for parents who are conscious about the media that their children consume.
There are so many mixed messages when it comes to screen time that it can be overwhelming and confusing for parents. We are told that X show is too overstimulating and Y game is dangerous but where is the balance? For some families (mine included) going completely screen free just isn’t an option, for various reasons. But we also want to do what’s best for our children and reading that certain shows are bad for our kids can make us feel like bad parents (my child watched a fair bit of CoComelon before I knew better).

6 shows an OT and mum says she lets her kids watch
Brooke Boruff, a mum and Occupational Therapist with over 200K followers on Instagram says that there are six shows that she actually doesn’t mind her children watching because they ‘teach valuable lessons’.
‘In a world where there is so much to view, I’ve tried to filter through and find the best shows that teach tangible tips the kids can use at their developmental level,’ the mum explained to her followers.
‘Sure, is Paw Patrol & Spider-Man fine in moderation?’ Brooke reassured before adding: ‘Yes. But, I’d rather choose something that offers a little less stimulation, aggressions, and action.
‘Something a little more peaceful. A little more mellow.’

Here are the TV shows that the mum does let her children watch, and why:
1. Slumberkins – This cute show was created alongside soft toys ‘to teach emotional skills and how to navigate big feelings’.
2. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood – A show that ran from 1968 – 2001 and full episodes can be found on YouTube. It’s the ‘lowest stimulation show ever’ says Brooke and has lessons on ‘feelings, sharing, inclusiveness and more’. ‘I’m obsessed. They’re obsessed. We’re all obsessed’, she said.

3. Gus Plus Us – This show is available on YouTube and discusses ‘real life topics’ like ‘bravery, sickness, and mistakes in an easy way for kids to understand’.
4. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – This is a favourite in many households and Brooke says she ‘lowkey loves’ it because it ‘teaches on topics like welcoming a new sibling, big feelings, daily routines and more.’

5. Bluey – This show is so popular it is unsurprising to see it on the list. The Occupational Therapist says it is a ‘low stimulation show that helps foster imagination and creative play’.
She explained that her children play a lot of the games that feature on the show and it’s fun for everyone in the family.
6. Arthur – Many of us will remember this from our own childhoods and it is one that many kids still enjoy today.
‘I loved this as a kid. Now my kids love this,’ Brooke said. ‘Arthur has to navigate sibling dynamics, sharing and more.’

Brooke also gave an honourable mention to Barney and Berenstain Bears.
‘If you’re finding yourself letting your littles watch more TV than normal post-vacay or during the heat of the summer, try these!’ the mum added.
People in the comments loved the options, thanking her for sharing. ‘We LOVE Mr. Rogers!! I’m continually amazed how such a calm show can keep my kids so captivated. They’re obsessed,’ said one person.
‘My 10 month old squeals for bluey!! And a show we can have on that doesn’t annoy us as parents. A fam favourite for us!’ another follower added.
