A dentist has a trick up her sleeve for making sure kids’ teeth are as healthy as they can be.
Teaching kids to brush their teeth and cut down on sugar might be half the battle, and while limiting sugar is a good idea in terms of avoiding cavities, there’s more to it when keeping teeth strong and straight.

A dentist recently took to social media to share the trick she uses with her own children that not only keeps cavities at bay, but that can also help your child avoiding needing braces later on in life.
And honestly – we cannot believe how easy this is.
Dentist and mum Kathleen Schuster, who posts to Instagram under the handle The Dentist Next Door, shared a video of her child munching on a cucucmber.
In the text overlaying the video, the dentist writes:
‘The most overlooked health habit costs less than $1 and takes less than 5 minutes.’
What they chewed when they were little matters, dentist confirms
Explaining what she meant in the caption, Schuster wrote:
‘Every bite of crunchy raw food is jaw exercise.’

She added:
‘The more they chew the wider the jaw grows. The wider the jaw the more room their teeth have.’
There are also other benefits to kids chewing raw food, the dentist confirms.
‘This also developed a proper bite, proper muscle balance, and proper posture.’
And all this, she explains, could actually end up being the reason children avoid having to wear braces later on in life. And knowing the cost of braces, this bargain health trick is something all parents should know about.

Schuster goes on to say:
‘Some kids need braces. Some don’t. A lot of it comes down to what they chewed on when they were little.’
She then reminds parents that sometimes, it is the thing we do that we don’t even think about that ends up having the biggest impact.
‘The cheapest thing she ate all day is doing the most work,’ the dentist said about her daughter.
And honestly, we are so trying this trick on our own kids.
