Mairéad Ronan has explained the reason behind her tough decision to leave radio after years on the airwaves.
The mum-of-three took a step back during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite having spent years working towards the position she held. The Dublin woman recalled how she and her husband had become passing ships.
Mairéad and her second husband, Louis, who she married in 2015, were rotating shifts as they parented their kids without childcare. She remembered her pulling into the driveway and him simultaneously pulling out to head to work.

‘It just went on and on and on,’ she said, ‘So, I disappeared. I’m like a radio Enya. I haven’t done an interview in four years.’
Mairéad knew it was time to take a step back, deciding she needed to stop working full-time. ‘Not stop working but stop working five days, and get a handle on all this, because everything was a bit all over the place, and balls were being dropped.’

She explained to the Irish Independent that she never felt on top of anything, trying to balance her hectic work schedule whilst raising her teenage son, Dara, and then-toddlers, Eliza and Bonnie, and so she decided ‘something had to give.’
Mairéad recalled how surprised her family was at the time. ‘My family was shocked, my in-laws were shocked, because they knew how hard I’d worked and how much I loved it.’

‘My dad, the first thing he said, and again this goes back to work being the most important thing that you can do, was, “Oh good Jesus, have you had a falling out with management?” I was like, “No, they want me to stay, actually,” she recalled.
Mairéad has been giving fans their fix as she appears as a regular guest on her close pal Ray D’arcy’s podcast.
