Irish mum shares 13 tips parents need to know before Disney trip

by Louise Porter / 3 months ago

An Irish mum has shared some tips for families heading to Disney that you may not have thought of.

A Disney trip, whether in Paris or Florida, is the trip of dreams for most children, so if you are planning to go yourself this summer, then there are things you should know.

Disneyland (or World) is the happiest place on earth, or so they say. But anyone who has travelled with children will know that no matter where you take them, and how fun or expensive it is, they will still be kids and get cranky or tired.

So when planning a trip that, yes, is amazing, but also potentially overstimulating and very tiring, you need to be very prepared so that you can all have the best time ever.

Mum-of-three and speech and language therapist Emma O’Leary, who posts online under the handle Life With Tiny Humans, took a trip to Disney in Orlando with her family, and there are a few important things she learned from the trip.

Captioning the post, Emma said that these 13 tips are how her family of five ‘survived’ Disney. ‘It’s amazing… but it’s also a very long day with kids (20,000+ steps kind of long),’ she said. ‘We did the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios on this trip and they were both incredible!’

Irish mum’s 13 tips for a successful Disney trip with kids

  1. Arrive early as you can
  2. If you can, leave mid-afternoon and go back for the parade and fireworks
  3. Check heights + show kids rides in advance which helps avoid meltdowns
  4. Use the Disney app for wait times and a loose plan
  5. Food tip – We brought sandwiches on some days and saved €60 – 70 on lunch
  6. Snacks and a refillable water bottle are essential
  7. Comfortable shoes always
  8. Take a bum bag for your phone/tickets
  9. Handheld fans are useful for queues
  10. Shows – arrive 15–20 mins early (being in the queue doesn’t guarantee entry once they reach capacity)
  11. Don’t skip the funnel cake
  12. Biggest sanity saver… Set expectations around gift shops BEFORE you go on certain peramitors such as getting only one thing / skiping going to a store to buy something or waiting until the last day. Otherwise, it’s “can I have this?” all day at the end of every ride that leads to a gift shop
  13. Under 6? A cheap Walmart stroller is a game-changer

‘It’s busy, it’s tiring… but it’s magical,’ she finished.
